How a Continuous Swiss Travel Pass activates: the date you picked does it for you
If you bought a Continuous Swiss Travel Pass, there's nothing to activate. You chose a start date at checkout, and on that date your pass switches itself on and then runs consecutively until it runs out, whether you travel every day or spend three of them lying by a lake. No app tap, no button, no counter to click. That's the whole appeal: you pick the date carefully and then stop thinking about it.
The flip side is that a Continuous pass doesn't wait for you. A rest day, a rainy day, a day you spend entirely in one town on foot, those all burn a day of your pass. So the only real decision is the start date, and it's worth getting it right before you check out.
How to activate a Flexi travel day at activateyourpass.com
A Flexi pass works differently. You get a set number of travel days to use inside a one month window, and each one gets switched on individually, by you, before you travel.
- Open activateyourpass.com on your phone or laptop.
- Enter your pass details from the PDF you were emailed.
- Pick the date you want to travel and activate that single day.
- Board your train, boat or bus and show the QR code on your PDF when asked.
- Repeat the next time you want to travel, until your days are used or the one month window closes.
You only ever activate one day at a time, so there's no way to accidentally use up your whole allowance. More on how the days-inside-a-window system works on our Flexi pass page.
No signal in the mountains? Any staffed station will activate the day for you
If you're standing on a platform in a valley with one bar of reception and the site won't load, don't panic and don't board unactivated. Walk into any staffed station and the counter will activate the day for you. It takes a minute and it's a normal request, staff do it constantly.
The 11:59pm deadline: when you can still change a Flexi travel day
You can change a Flexi travel day until 11:59pm the night before. Weather turned, plans shifted, you'd rather do Jungfrau on Thursday than Wednesday? Change it the evening before and nothing is lost.
What you can't do is cancel a travel day on the day itself. Once the date arrives, that day is spent, used or not. So if there's any doubt about tomorrow, make the call before midnight tonight rather than waking up and deciding over breakfast.
Your travel day actually runs until 5am the next morning
A travel day isn't midnight-to-midnight. It runs through to 5am the following morning, which matters more than it sounds. Board a late or overnight train on the evening of your last travel day and you're still covered as it rolls on past midnight. You don't need to burn a second day for a journey that starts at 10pm.
Flexi or Continuous? What the extra flexibility actually costs
Flexi always costs more than Continuous for the same number of days. Here's the gap, second class:
| Days | Flexi | Continuous | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 days | $356.40 | $313.24 | About 15% more |
| 4 days | $430 | $381.07 | About 13% more |
| 6 days | $523 | $492.06 | About 6% more |
| 8 days | $566 | $541.39 | About 5% more |
| 15 days | $640 | $615.38 | About 4% more |
The premium is steepest on short passes and narrows to about 4 to 6% at the longer lengths. The maths is simple: Flexi only pays off if you'd genuinely leave Continuous days unused. If you're moving most days, Continuous wins and you skip the activation admin entirely. If you're basing yourself in one place with day trips scattered through the fortnight, Flexi earns its keep. We've put the full comparison in Continuous vs Flexi.
Buying, cancelling and delivery: what happens before the clock starts
- Buy up to 180 days ahead. Plenty of runway to lock in a start date early.
- Cancellation is free up to 48 hours before your start date. After that, you're committed, another reason to sanity-check the date the week before.
- The price is identical wherever you buy it. No reseller is cheaper, so buy wherever the checkout feels easiest.
- It arrives as a PDF by email. The QR code on that PDF is your ticket. Nothing to collect at a station, nothing to stamp, nothing to validate at a machine.
Save the PDF offline and screenshot the QR code too, conductors scan it, and you don't want to be hunting through your inbox on a train through a tunnel. Pair it with the SBB app for live times and platform changes. Travelling with kids? Check how family pricing works before you buy, because it changes the sums considerably.
