Eggishorn with the Swiss Travel Pass

Eggishorn is half price with the Swiss Travel Pass, CHF 26 instead of CHF 52, and it gives the postcard view over Konkordiaplatz where four glaciers meet on the Aletsch.

Half price to Eggishorn: CHF 26 instead of CHF 52

The Swiss Travel Pass knocks 50% off the return from Fiesch to Eggishorn, so you pay CHF 26 rather than CHF 52. That's an ordinary return ticket, valid 30 days, with no seat reservation and nothing to book ahead. Turn up at the Fiesch valley station, buy it, get in the gondola.

Getting from Fiesch to Eggishorn in two stages

Reaching Fiesch is the long part: from Zurich it's roughly 2h 30mins to Brig, then another 45 minutes on the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn up the valley. From there it's about twenty minutes of lift time, and the two stages are nothing alike.

  1. Small gondolas from Fiesch up to Fiescheralp, 10 minutes, running continuously from 7.30am to 5.30pm in season.
  2. A change at Fiescheralp to the 45-person cable car, another 8 to 10 minutes to the top, running 08:55 to 16:55.

The whole round trip from Fiesch takes under two hours, and that's with an hour at the top, which is about right. The lifts take wheelchairs and prams, and two bags travel free, which matters because the Aletsch Arena is car free and the cable car is the only way in for anyone staying up there.

What you see from the Eggishorn ridge at 2,869m

Four glaciers run together at Konkordiaplatz to make the Aletsch, and from up here the whole thing looks poured rather than frozen. Behind it stand the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.

The viewpoint is a ridge, not a peak. The actual summit sits 500m further north at 2,926m, and a Grand Tour of Switzerland photo banner marks the spot where everyone stands for the picture.

Things worth your hour up there:

  • The ridge viewpoint with the Grand Tour banner, which is the shot you came for.
  • A sunrise ride, from CHF 68.
  • Walking down and across to Bettmeralp or Riederalp instead of riding back the way you came.

Eggishorn and Bettmerhorn are two separate tickets

Both are Aletsch viewpoints and they look adjacent on a map, but they're reached from different valley stations on different lifts.

Whether Bettmerhorn gives no discount at all or just a smaller one isn't confirmed, so budget for the full CHF 55 and treat anything less as a bonus. If you're mapping out where the pass stops working, the no discount mountains page covers the lifts that charge you full whack.

The three-viewpoint ticket for Moosfluh, Bettmerhorn and Eggishorn

If you want all three Aletsch viewpoints in one go, there's a combined ticket at CHF 48 for an adult, or CHF 30 with a Half Fare Card. No Swiss Travel Pass price is recorded for it, which means the safe assumption is that your CHF 26 Eggishorn return is the better deal unless you're genuinely doing all three in a day.

Eggishorn opening dates and the six week gap

Summer runs 6 June to 25 October 2026, with the top cable car working 08:55 to 16:55. Winter starts again on 5 December. In between there are six weeks when nothing runs at all, so late October and most of November are a wasted journey.

The Eggishorn rebuild from spring 2026

The Fiescheralp to Eggishorn cable car is being replaced from spring 2026, along with a new restaurant and a glacier exhibit at the top station. The buildings coming down date from the 1960s and 80s, so this is overdue rather than cosmetic.

The work runs through the summers to keep the winter seasons clear, with the last of it reopening in December 2028. One seller warns of possible restrictions from 17 August, so check before you commit to a specific date in the second half of summer.

Where to eat: Fiescheralp and Fiesch village

Nothing is recorded about food at the top station, which makes sense for a building that's about to be demolished, so plan to eat on the way up or down. Kuehboden at Fiescheralp does a mountain breakfast from CHF 27, and Hotel Waldhaus and Hotel Alpfrieden serve Valais food at CHF 25 to 40 a main. Down in Fiesch there's a Coop, cafes and a pizzeria, which is the cheap option if you'd rather carry lunch up.

Walking down from Eggishorn, and what the pass covers

Ride up, walk across and come down somewhere else is a real thing you can buy here. With the pass the cable car is the only part you pay for: Bettmeralp down to Betten is a lift, Betten to Fiesch is a train, and both are covered.

  • Eggishorn to Märjelensee to Bettmeralp. 14.5km, 500m up and 1,540m down, about five hours, July to September. The first descent is steep and a snowfield can hang on into July. After that there's no exposure, and almost no shade either.
  • Bettmerhorn to Hohfluh along the ridge. 5.5km, 120m up and 550m down. Gentler, good views, further from the glacier.
  • Fiescheralp to Riederalp between the villages. A gradual descent from just above the treeline, with Bettmeralp partway. No glacier on this one: the villages sit on the wrong side of the ridge, which is the whole reason a viewpoint costs a lift ticket.

The ridge routes are not the village walk. Bettmerhorn to Eggishorn is graded T4, which means rocky, partly climbing and wanting sure footing, and the full Riederfurka, Bettmerhorn, Eggishorn and Fiescheralp loop runs about 23km with 1,417m of ascent over nine hours. If the descent from Märjelensee looks like too much on the day, a tunnel from there puts you back at Fiescheralp in about an hour and a half.

Why the top can be in cloud when Brig is sunny

The glacier generates its own weather, so a clear morning in the valley tells you very little about what's happening at 2,869m. The CHF 26 return is valid 30 days, which is the useful part: if the summit is socked in on day one, come back later in the trip rather than paying twice.

FAQ

How much is Eggishorn with the Swiss Travel Pass?

CHF 26 return from Fiesch, half the full fare of CHF 52. It's an ordinary return ticket, valid for 30 days.

Do you need to reserve for the Eggishorn cable car?

No. There are no reservations and no reservation fee, so you buy at the valley station in Fiesch and get on.

How do you get to Fiesch from Zurich?

Train to Brig, about 2h 30mins, then the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn up the valley to Fiesch, roughly another 45 minutes. The lifts add about twenty minutes on top of that.

When is Eggishorn open in 2026?

The summer season runs 6 June to 25 October 2026, with the top cable car operating 08:55 to 16:55. Winter starts on 5 December, and nothing runs in the six weeks between.

Is Bettmerhorn covered by the Swiss Travel Pass?

It's a separate route from Betten via Bettmeralp, at around CHF 55, and it isn't confirmed whether the pass gives a discount there at all. Your Eggishorn ticket doesn't cover it.

Can you take a pram or wheelchair up Eggishorn?

Yes, both lifts are suitable for wheelchairs and prams, and two bags are carried free. The Aletsch Arena is car free, so the cable car is the only way up.

What else is worth doing with the pass nearby?

If you're working through the big glacier viewpoints, Mittelallalin and Glacier 3000 are the two to compare on price and coverage.

Is Eggishorn worth CHF 26 with the Swiss Travel Pass?

Yes, because CHF 26 buys the view over Konkordiaplatz and a round trip you can finish in under two hours from Fiesch. Skip it only if the summit is in cloud, and use the 30 day ticket validity to come back on a clear day instead.
