What Matterhorn Glacier Paradise costs with a Swiss Travel Pass
You get 50% off Zermatt to Klein Matterhorn, so roughly CHF 50 to 60 instead of CHF 100 to 120 return. The operator prices this one dynamically, which is why nobody can give you a single number: the fare moves with the date and the demand, and the discount comes off whatever it happens to be that morning. That fare also covers the Glacier Palace, the Cinema Lounge, the summit viewing platform and the InfoCube at Trockener Steg, so once you're up there the only thing you'll be asked for money for is lunch, the gift shop and the toilets.
Getting from Zermatt to Klein Matterhorn
It's about 40 minutes from Zermatt, on a chain of gondolas and cable cars with changes along the way.
- Zurich to Zermatt via Visp, about 3 hours 15 minutes. An early train, if you want the mountain the same day.
- Zermatt up to Furi.
- On to Trockener Steg.
- The last stage to Klein Matterhorn at 3,883m.
No reservation is needed and there's no reservation fee, but in peak season the ticket counter queue is a real thing, so buy online ahead and walk past it. Allow three to four hours from the bottom station and back: the ride, the Glacier Palace, the cinema and the platforms, without sprinting.
Opening times and the season on the Glacier Ride
The top station is open year round, daily from roughly 08:30 to 17:30. The Glacier Ride runs 4 May to 31 October with two maintenance breaks, and an alternative cable car covers you on those dates, so you'll still get up. The Riffelberg Express runs 27 June to 16 August, and the crossing into Italy runs 4 May to 31 October 2026.
What to do at the top of Matterhorn Glacier Paradise
Four things fill the time up there.
- The Glacier Palace, 15 metres below the surface between Klein Matterhorn and Breithorn: ice tunnels, sculptures made by artists and by nature, a crevasse you walk along, an ice slide and photo points. Allow 30 to 45 minutes.
- The Cinema Lounge, the highest cinema in Europe, with short films on alpinism, flora and fauna, the railways, and ice and snow. The operator itself points people here when the weather turns.
- The summit viewing platform, with panoramic boards that name what you're looking at.
- Snow tubing, running year round.
There's no walking as such at the top. This is a station on a rock at 3,883m, not a trailhead.
The view from 3,883m: 38 peaks over 4,000m and 14 glaciers
From the platform you're looking across three countries at 38 peaks over 4,000 metres and 14 glaciers, Mont Blanc, Gran Paradiso, Breithorn and Castor among them. The panoramic boards name them, which saves the usual argument about which white triangle is which.
Crossing to Testa Grigia in Italy
From 4 May to 31 October you can carry straight on over the border, four minutes from 3,883m down to 3,458m, wheelchair accessible, and you need ID in your pocket. The through ticket has firm prices rather than the dynamic ones, and passes discount the Italian stretch.
| Season | Through ticket to Testa Grigia |
|---|---|
| Winter | CHF 143 |
| Shoulder season | CHF 183 |
| Summer high | CHF 207 |
Peak2Peak: Klein Matterhorn and Gornergrat in one day
Peak2Peak is CHF 156 full price and CHF 78 with a Swiss Travel Pass, and it covers this mountain and Gornergrat on the same day. It's a long day and two very different mountains. What the pass is worth on every other summit is on the mountain coverage page. If you'd rather spread it out, the Zermatt Peak Pass covers Matterhorn Glacier Paradise unlimited.
Food, toilets and what costs extra
The restaurant at the top is the highest in Europe and does breakfast, homemade soup, Valais specialities, burgers, pasta, desserts and set meals, alongside a gift shop and a 50-seat conference room, in case you fancy a meeting at 3,883m. The toilets cost CHF 2, so keep coins on you.
What catches people out at Klein Matterhorn
It's below freezing at the top even in July, and the Glacier Palace is colder still. One visitor rushed the ice tunnels because they hadn't dressed for the cold, and regretted it. Bring a proper jacket, and move slowly up there.
Children under 3 aren't allowed above Trockener Steg, so if you're travelling with a toddler, plan to stop there and use the InfoCube instead.
FAQ
How much is Matterhorn Glacier Paradise with the Swiss Travel Pass?
Roughly CHF 50 to 60 return instead of CHF 100 to 120, a straight 50% discount. The full fare is priced dynamically, so it shifts with the season and the day.
Do I need a reservation for Matterhorn Glacier Paradise?
No, there's no reservation and no reservation fee. Buy online ahead in peak season anyway, because the ticket counter queue gets long.
Is the Glacier Palace included in the Klein Matterhorn fare?
Yes. The Glacier Palace, the Cinema Lounge, the summit viewing platform and the InfoCube at Trockener Steg are all in the fare.
Can I cross into Italy from Klein Matterhorn?
Yes, from 4 May to 31 October 2026, on a four minute ride from 3,883m down to Testa Grigia at 3,458m. Carry ID, and expect CHF 143 in winter, CHF 183 in the shoulder season or CHF 207 at the summer high for the through ticket, with a pass discount on the Italian stretch.
How long should I allow at Matterhorn Glacier Paradise?
Three to four hours covers the ride from Zermatt, the Glacier Palace at 30 to 45 minutes, the Cinema Lounge and the viewing platforms. The journey up alone is about 40 minutes each way including changes.
Is it worth going in bad weather?
The view is the point, so a grey day costs you the 38 peaks and 14 glaciers. If you're going anyway, the operator's own suggestion is the Cinema Lounge, and the Glacier Palace doesn't care what the sky is doing.
