What the Schynige Platte cogwheel costs with a Swiss Travel Pass

The return from Wilderswil is CHF 68 at full price and CHF 34 with the Swiss Travel Pass. That's a straight 50% discount on the railway.

Children aged 6 to 15 travel at half price, under 6s go free, and kids with an SBB Junior Card or Swiss Family Card ride free with you. If you're heading up late, afternoon tickets start at CHF 45 full price, which is still more than your CHF 34, so the pass wins even then. The Alpine Botanical Garden at the top is included in the fare rather than charged separately, which is a nicer surprise than it sounds.

When the Schynige Platte railway runs: 13 June to 25 October 2026

This is a summer-only mountain. Trains run daily every 40 minutes from around 08:00, from 13 June to 25 October 2026, and then the whole thing shuts. There is no winter service at all, not a reduced timetable, not weekends only. Dates for the following year aren't published yet, so if you're planning far ahead, assume mid June and check later.

Getting to Wilderswil from Zurich and Interlaken

Wilderswil is the bottom station. From Interlaken Ost it's one stop and eight minutes. From Zurich it's about 2 hours 15 minutes via Interlaken, and both legs are fully covered by the Swiss Travel Pass, so the CHF 34 is genuinely all you'll spend.

  1. Take the train to Interlaken Ost, around 2 hours from Zurich.
  2. Change for Wilderswil, one stop, eight minutes.
  3. Buy your cogwheel ticket at Wilderswil and join the queue.
  4. Ride 52 minutes to the summit at 1,967m in an open carriage.

Why you can't reserve a seat on the Schynige Platte train

Seat reservation isn't offered at all, which also means it costs nothing, so the only thing to manage is timing. It's first come, first served, and on clear July and August days the trains fill up and the gaps between them start to feel long. Buy the CHF 34 ticket ahead rather than turning up hoping, and go in the morning if you can, because crowds build from early afternoon. If you're a wheelchair user you'll need to phone at least an hour before, for both the way up and the way down.

The Skywalk, the botanical garden and the Berghotel at the top

The summit itself isn't the point. What you go up for is the stuff spread along the ridge, and there are three things worth your time.

  • The Alpine Botanical Garden. Around 800 species, open daily 08:30 to 18:00 in season, included in your fare, with a free guided tour at 13:45. A July Sunday morning with the alpine roses out is the best it gets. It isn't wheelchair accessible.
  • The Skywalk. A viewing platform at the summit station.
  • Berghotel Schynige Platte. Old-style rooms and a sun terrace, with a reputation built on sunrises and sunsets. Staying the night is the only way to see either.

The view is the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, with Lakes Thun and Brienz laid out below you, and ridges, karst, cliffs and alpine forest in between.

Walking from Schynige Platte: the Panorama Trail and the Faulhorn route to First

There are two walks people actually do from the top, and they're wildly different in size. Both start at the summit station.

If you do the long one, walk it in this direction rather than the reverse. First sits higher, so starting there makes the day slightly easier, but the views of the Jungfrau range are better this way round. Along the way you'll cross Faulhorn at 2,690m, higher than Schynige Platte itself, so this isn't a stroll. Expect chains and stairs in places and almost no shade, so carry water and a hat.

Where to eat on Schynige Platte

Three options, and one of them is halfway up the mountain.

  • The Berghotel Schynige Platte, the sit-down choice, with the terrace.
  • A newer bistro at the summit station, for killing time before your train.
  • A bistro at Breitlauenen, halfway up, which the railway itself claims serves the best fruit cake in the Bernese Oberland. That's a bold claim in a region that takes fruit cake seriously.

All three double as your indoor shelter if the weather turns, which on an exposed ridge at 1,967m it can.

Berner Oberland Pass and Jungfrau Travel Pass both cover Schynige Platte in full

This is the part worth checking before you pay anything. Two regional passes cover the Schynige Platte railway outright rather than halving it, so if you're spending a week in the Bernese Oberland the maths can shift.

One mountain won't justify a regional pass on its own. But if Schynige Platte is one of several lifts on your list, run the numbers, and see what your Swiss Travel Pass covers elsewhere before you decide.

FAQ

How much is Schynige Platte with the Swiss Travel Pass?

CHF 34 return from Wilderswil, instead of CHF 68 at full price. That's a 50% discount on the cogwheel railway, and the Alpine Botanical Garden at the top is included in the fare.

Is Schynige Platte open in winter?

No. The railway runs from 13 June to 25 October 2026 and there's no winter service whatsoever. Dates for the following season haven't been published yet.

How long does the Schynige Platte cogwheel take?

52 minutes each way from Wilderswil, with departures every 40 minutes from around 08:00. It's slow, reviewers say so constantly, and the slowness in open carriages is more or less the point.

Can I reserve a seat on the Schynige Platte train?

No, seat reservation isn't offered, so it costs nothing and it's first come, first served. Availability gets tight on clear July and August days, so buy in advance and travel in the morning if you can.

How do I get to Schynige Platte from Zurich?

About 2 hours 15 minutes to Wilderswil via Interlaken, then 52 minutes up on the cogwheel. Wilderswil is one stop and eight minutes from Interlaken Ost.

How long should I allow at Schynige Platte?

Half a day, minimum. The Skywalk, the botanical garden and the ridge walks are the reason to go, and the two-hour Panorama Trail alone eats most of an afternoon.

Is Schynige Platte wheelchair accessible?

The Panorama Restaurant is accessible, but the Alpine Botanical Garden isn't. Wheelchair users need to phone at least an hour ahead for both the ascent and the descent.

Is Schynige Platte worth CHF 34 with your Swiss Travel Pass?

Yes, if you'll walk when you get there and you can go in the morning, because the Panorama Trail and the botanical garden are what you're paying for, not the 52-minute ride or the summit station. Turn up for the ride alone and you have paid CHF 34 for a slow train.
